I have been thinking about doing this one for a long time. When I was very young, I read Lawrence Durell's "Alexandria Quartet", and marvelled at how his writing so clearly evoked a place where I had never been. Then, when I finally got to go there, I really appreciated his writing. Because it was all there just as I had imagined it in my mind….the smells (diesel fuel mixed with jasmine, spices and others,) the sounds, the wails, the music, the call to prayer, the activity in the bazaar, the City of the Dead, the heat, yes, the dust, the pyramids, the lovely people, the cacophony of languages.
